Our Story & Name

Bethel has been in the city for over 60 years. In 1953, a group of passionate pioneers planted a church with a focus of reaching out to German immigrants. As the years passed, its vision
expanded to reach and reflect the diverse demographic of Vancouver, becoming increasingly multi-ethnic. We honor our roots and the shape the church has taken over the years while moving forward with the relevant message of Jesus to a new generation.

Our Name

Bethel means “house of God” in ancient Hebrew. It signified a place where people came to meet with God in worship. In this respect, we see “Bethel” as a place where lives are changed as they encounter the reality of God’s love, power, and presence. Our hope is that people in our city will
experience God in a very real way, having their lives changed by Jesus.

We consider ourselves “international” because our congregation is made up of people from various countries around the world. Our heart is not only for this city and nation, but for all nations. Because of this, we actively support mission work locally, nationally, and globally. Our desire is to be a “house of prayer” for people of all nations.
